All About Troop 658

Troop 658 is part of the Big Cypress District in the Sam Houston Area Council.

The troop is located in Cypress, Texas and is sponsored by Messiah Lutheran Church.

The troop has been in continuous existence for over 25 years. We are striving for a boy-led troop that follows the Boy Scouts of America program. Our emphasis is not upon any one aspect of scouting or camping, but rather on general scouting activities. The boys choose the activities and plan the events with the assistance of the adult leaders. We want the boys to have fun while developing leadership, good character, self-confidence, good citizenship, and a sense of individual and group responsibility through camping and related scouting activities. Our campouts are generally centered around rank advancement, merit badges or service projects. Recent activities have included rock climbing, summer camps in Oklahoma and Texas with Horsemanship at camp (for older scouts), Splashtown, Schlitterbahn, and fishing/beach cleanup in Freeport and Galveston. Some activities planned for this year include a merit badge lock-in, a wilderness survival campout, backpacking and rock climbing at Enchanted Rock, canoeing, assisting at WTSE, and winter camp at Camp Strake. Other representative activities have included service projects, family picnic, Scout Fair, Flag Patrol activities, and more. Our meetings are a combination of patrol competition, rank advancement, merit badge, and camping preparation activities. In 2005 and 2006 we had several scouts and adult leaders participate in the MS 150 Bike tour. We have had 20 Scouts attain the rank of Eagle in the past 6 years, including 6 earning Eagle in 2005, 2 earning Eagle 2006, and 4 for 2007, 5 for 2008, and 2 earning Eagle so far this year. There are several Life Scouts currently working on Eagle projects.
